Perimenopause is the stage when your body starts to produce fewer hormones from the ovaries, causing the menstrual cycle to become erratic or irregular before your periods stop completely. This can result in you experiencing physical symptoms as your body adjusts to your differing hormone levels.
Although it generally happens in a woman’s 40s, it can happen much earlier and lasts on average between 3 to 8 years.
If you are a woman approaching 40, you will be perimenopausal now, or in the next few years.

About Carolyn
From Maritime to Menopause - why I became a coach
Let’s rewind 10 years… I’ve left my role working within Anti-Maritime Piracy Operations, and took to the sea again! Only this time on my own sailing boat, which my husband and I lived on for about 8 years; several relocations, and a baby later; I was struggling to find employment.
Realising that being 40+ and a Mum, sadly, doesn’t make for the most attractive proposition to prospective employers. And, realsing I wasn’t the only one in this kind of situation, I began questionning what was going so wrong, specifically for women over 40?
My research showed that menopause is a significant contributor to women feeling like their only options are either reducing to part time hours, or to leave their jobs completely…
In the UK, nearly 1 in 4 women consider leaving work due to menopause symptoms. Statistically, menopause hits between 45 and 55 , just when women are peaking in their careers (though through my work, I am finding women experience symptoms from as early as 35!)
These are the same women who have worked their way up the corporate ladder, smashing glass ceilings, driving productivity and profitiability. The same women who are mentoring and nurturing younger talent, leading strategic initiatives, and playing a key role in improving company culture.
In fact, studies in Japan and South America show that companies with more women in leadership positions, are more likely to have fair workplace policies and inclusive environments and, not just for women, but for ALL employees.
But, menopause in the workplace is still quite a taboo subject for all involved; with huge breakdowns in communication between female employees and upline managers. Yet, research by McKinsey found, companies with a higher percentage of female leadership are 25% more likely to have above-average profitability!
So, to get back to the beginning… I trained to became a Menopause Coach because, frankly, the statistics blew my mind! More needs to be done to support perimenopausal women in general and especially at work.
I’m super passionate about turning the tide on this, and helping women manage and allevaite their symptoms; communciating their needs to their employer, without compromising on their career aspirations.
And for companies… I support them too, with menopause training, coaching, policies and appraisals, improving both productivity and profitability.
